Welcome to Roots of Resilience Charter School

Education Rooted in Community, Culture, and Connection

A learning space grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing

Roots of Resilience Charter School is the only K–12 publicly funded Indigenous charter school in Canada, offering a learning space grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing where students see themselves reflected, respected, and uplifted.

We welcome Indigenous and non-Indigenous students from all backgrounds who are seeking a meaningful education rooted in Indigenous culture, community, and connection to the land.

As a public charter school approved by the Minister of Education, we deliver the Alberta Program of Studies through a lens of:

Indigenous knowledge systems

Daily land-based learning opportunities

Ceremonies, gatherings, and Indigenous cultural practices

Guided by a Two-Eyed Seeing approach

Guided by a Two-Eyed Seeing approach, our educators and support staff teach students to value and explore both Indigenous and Western knowledge systems - not as separate streams, but as equally valuable, interwoven sources of learning.

Our staff reflects the communities we serve, including First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and ally educators and support staff as we work in close connection with local Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and teacher candidates from the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program and the University of Alberta.

Student Experience

Our school lives in the Community Education and Training Centre in Drayton Valley, making full use of classrooms, outdoor spaces, and community connections that support hands-on, meaningful learning.

  • Culturally affirming learning environment honouring Nakota, Cree, Saulteaux, and Métis teachings.

  • Daily learning and application of knowledge through hands-on, interactive, experiential learning.

  • Small class sizes and for a supportive, inclusive setting.

  • Seasonal cultural ceremonies and celebrations.

  • Guidance that centres Indigenous voices and experiences across all areas of learning.

  • Holistic student wellness that nurtures mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Enrollment is now open for Kindergarten through Grade 12.

We own and operate our own buses and offer transportation to students in the broader Drayton Valley area. Contact us to inquire about eligibility.
